Seeking help for your health or life problems is one feat. Staying motivated and following through is a whole different ball game. Do you find it hard to follow up and implement the steps toward achieving your goals even after you’ve made a solid commitment and plan to change for the better?
Maybe you were on track to healthy eating, but one busy weekday found you pressed for time and grabbing a McDonald’s Big Mac. Perhaps you worked out to the max on one week, but ditched the gym completely the following week. Have you attempted to quit smoking cold-turkey more times than you could count on one hand? Or perhaps you made some new years resolutions that never again saw the light of day.
So how is it that we get so un-motivated? What keeps us from moving forward towards our health goals?
The fact of the matter is: we are creatures of habit. Chances are it has taken years to get into your current slump. So you shouldn’t expect yourself to be able to radically change your life overnight. As a matter of fact, radical lifestyle changes usually don’t last more than a few days.
What happens if this lack of motivation follows us through the years? Well, the outcomes usually aren’t so great. Bad habits continue and may end up causing complicated and advanced health problems.
So you’re wondering how you can get motivated and keep that motivation running high, right? Well let’s look at some star options:
Yeah you heard us right – talk to yourself. If you can’t convince you, who can? Self motivation and affirmations, when repeated, can really help generate significant changes.
Set personal goals & deadlines
This can be a great tool to meeting your goals in implementable and manageable steps, especially when they are neatly organized into your agenda.
Read inspiring books
Find authors you can connect with. Look for writing has the power to get you all riled up for change in the right direction. These words of wisdom can be very convincing and motivating.
Reward your accomplishments
Every small step represents how far you’ve come and how much closer you are to reaching your goals. Reward yourself with a fun or fulfilling outing. Mark your progress and noticeable results. Pride yourself on your accomplishments.
Make things easy
Step out of overwhelm and into simple. The last thing you want to do is set unreasonable goals or a cumbersome road to getting there. Keeping things simple will make you feel secure in moving forward.
Making changes on your own can feel monumental. You’ll find it’s a lot easier to eat healthy if you have a friend you can cook or have lunch with. It’s easier to exercise if you have a cheerleader urging you on.
