It’s about that time of year when the ice cream shops are in full swing of business. Those fashionable frozen yogurt shops are popping up all over the city. It’s normal to feel that desire for that classic summer treat. Everyone has food cravings from time to time – even Naturopaths! The fact is that ice cream contains a lot of unnecessary saturated fat, and although the frozen yogurt is touted as a healthier option with less fat, the artificial flavours and toppings are no help to a clean diet.
The problem is that if you ignore these cravings, this can lead you to binge eat later on. Each season tends to bring on certain cravings. As we enter into the warmth and heat of the summer, our bodies begin to let go of the desire for grounding, warm and nourishing foods. Instead, we tend to lean towards the coolness, freshness and punch of foods that are colder in quality and temperature. It really helps to tune into your body and bring a little insight into your craving before impulsively grabbing for ‘em. Ask yourself exactly which aspect of the food is it that you are craving; Is it the texture, flavor, hint of salty, sweet, or sour? What is the end result you are looking to achieve by eating this food?
So are there healthier alternatives that can satisfy that need?
Chances are, there are an abundance of healthy options. It just takes some fresh ideas and creative preparation. We love finding delicious and healthy replacements that can satisfy the urge and won’t sabotage your waistline. Over here at Resource Naturopathy, our minds are always thinking up alternative healthy food concoctions for unhealthy cravings.
Well this evening we created a healthier, probiotic version of the ice cream we had been dreaming of (see picture); A little more liquefied than its famous counterpart, but delectable nonetheless!
Of course we love our blessed Vitamix, which always makes the job quicker and easier. If you’re thinking of getting one, it’s well worth the investment in your health – as long as your creations are of the healthier kind. But if you don’t have one, a traditional blender will do just fine.
We’d love to share our secret concoction with you! Try this deliciously refreshing recipe for a summer treat:
